Daily Progress: Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor to run for Virginia attorney general

Taylor recently served as special prosecutor in the commonwealth’s case against one the men who carried a torch across UVa Grounds in 2017

Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor has filed paperwork to run for Virginia attorney general in 2025.

Taylor, a Democrat, recently served as special prosecutor in the commonwealth’s case against one of the hundreds of participants in the 2017 torch-carrying mob that marched across University of Virginia Grounds ahead the fatal Unite the Right rally-turned-riot. Although a mistrial was declared after the jury deadlocked earlier this month, Taylor said she doesn’t plan on backing down and will return to court in August.

Taylor filed a statement of organization Saturday with the Virginia Department of Elections that was accepted on Monday.

Taylor has been Henrico County’s top prosecutor since 2011, when she became the first woman to hold the position in the county.

A representative for her campaign said that Taylor is planning to make her official announcement after Tuesday’s primary elections.
