2011 – Shannon “shocks” the political world. Humiliates Eric Cantor. Makes History.
It was a victory political observers called “shocking.” Despite entering the race just 10 weeks before election day and being outspent by a 4 to 1 margin, Shannon Taylor defeated powerful Republican Delegate Bill Janis, the hand-picked candidate of Congressional House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, by 8 percent. Cantor, who directed an unprecedented amount of funding to the Janis campaign, was humiliated as Shannon became the first female Commonwealth’s Attorney in Henrico history.
Republicans were still seething about Shannon’s 2011 victory, and were determined not to let it happen in 2015. But, despite it being a challenging year for Democrats throughout Virginia, Shannon beat the GOP again, this time by 13%, getting 56% of the vote. It was a victory so impressive that even the right-wing Richmond Times Dispatch editorial page grudgingly said Shannon is an “unsurpassed political strategist. Twice she outsmarted the big boys.”
2019 – Leading Democrats to Victory
Shannon beats her 3rd Republican in 8 years, this time getting almost 63% of the vote and leading the Democratic ticket. She carries all 5 magisterial districts in the County, including the 3 represented by Republicans on the Board of Supervisors. Democrats win General Assembly seats and Shannon’s leadership is critical to the election of the first African American woman as Sheriff in County history.
