Wittman has traded $2.5M worth of stocks during his time in Congress and refuses to say if he will sell shares of controversial energy company
Henrico, VA – Henrico County’s top prosecutor Shannon Taylor slammed Rob Wittman for his active stock portfolio after new reporting from Dogwood revealed that he owns shares in NextEra Energy, which is looking to merge with Dominion Energy in a $67 billion deal. While Virginians struggle with rising energy prices, Wittman is personally invested in the major utility company that could jack up electricity bills even further across the Commonwealth and refuses to say whether he’ll sell his shares.

According to Dogwood, there are “concerns over how such a deal would impact Virginians’ rising energy costs…NextEra recently agreed to pay $150 million to settle allegations that the company lied about its involvement in political interference schemes in Florida. It’s a highly profitable company that’s been criticized for benefiting from a $7 billion rate hike in Florida.”
“While Virginians struggle with rising utility costs, Rob Wittman has spent his decades in Congress getting richer. He has traded more than $2.5 million worth of stocks while in office, including in industries he’s supposed to be regulating,” said Taylor. “He has become part of the Washington corruption that is costing Virginia families, and as we fight to stop this merger that could cost us even more, he is siding with his investments yet again. That’s exactly why I’ve called for a ban on stock trading by members of Congress — because your representative should be working for you, not their own portfolio.”
