HENRICO, VA — Tomorrow marks one year since Rob Wittman voted for the Big, Ugly Bill — a disastrous tax scam that enacted the largest cuts to Medicaid and food assistance in American history to fund massive tax breaks for billionaires, including a tax break for Wittman himself on his Outer Banks beach house.
One year later, the evidence is in, and Henrico’s top prosecutor and candidate for Congress in VA01, Shannon Taylor, released the following statement:
“Rob Wittman knew exactly how disastrous this bill would be – he said so himself – and then he cast the deciding vote for it anyway,” said Taylor. “That is corruption in plain sight. He voted to raise costs on Virginia families, gut rural health care, and hand massive giveaways to the wealthy and well-connected, including politicians like himself. I’ve spent my career holding people accountable when they harm our communities, and in Congress, I’ll hold Rob Wittman and the corrupt system he represents accountable too.”
THE EVIDENCE, ONE YEAR LATER:
- Nearly 350,000 Virginians are at risk of losing health coverage as marketplace and Medicaid enrollment collapse under the law.
- Four clinics have already closed in Virginia, and 13 hospitals — including Rappahannock General right here in VA-01 — are at risk of closing next.
- Health care premiums have soared 23% for Virginians in 2026, forcing families to pay more or drop coverage altogether.
- Millions have lost access to food assistance. Enrollment has fallen by 14% in Virginia, with 114,000 fewer people in the state receiving nutrition assistance.
- Wittman personally profited — his tax break on his luxury beach house was worth more than some of his constituents make in a year.
“Rob Wittman has had nearly 20 years in Washington, and this is what he has to show for it: a broken promise, a corrupt vote, and a district paying the price,” continued Taylor. “I’m running for Congress to prosecute the case against Rob Wittman and against a Washington that works for insiders instead of working families.”
Taylor has made cleaning up corruption in Washington and holding politicians accountable a defining issue of her campaign. As part of her “Serve the People First” agenda, she supports banning members of Congress from trading stocks, instituting a lifetime ban on members of Congress becoming lobbyists, and mandating real jail time for politicians who break the public trust and abuse their office. Taylor has pledged not to take a dime of corporate PAC money in her campaign or in Congress.
